Maintaining the balance of alkalinity and acidity in our bodies is critical to fighting aging and disease (not to mention weight gain). The balance is known as your pH, which stands for “power of hydrogen”. The scale ranges from 0.0 to 14. 0.0 is the most acidic and 14 is the most alkaline. 7.0 is neutral. The ideal blood pH is 7.365 (Alkaline).
Each day when you choose a food to eat it leaves an acidic or alkaline ash in your body. You might get confused and think well limes and lemons are acid so they must leave an acidic ash in my body. WRONG. The taste or profile of the food has nothing to do with the way it is digested and broken down. Lemons and limes actually leave an alkaline ash. Dairy milk on the other hand on its own has an alkaline pH but when it is digested it leaves acidic residue, same thing goes for animal protein. (REMEMBER Alkaline is what you want! Stay away from foods that leave an acidic ash!)
When the body has an overload of acidic ash it often leaches alkaline minerals out of other areas in the body to bring the pH in balance. This leads to loss of calcium, potassium and magnesium, which often can lead to osteoporosis.
Among the most acid-forming food is animal protein. I know many people’s diet consists of A LOT of meat. Unfortunately this could be doing more harm to your body than good. If you tend to eat a lot of animal protein make sure you are eating a substantial amount of alkaline-forming foods to counteract the effects of the meat. One study showed that when protein intake was doubled there was a 50 percent increase in calcium being excreted in the urine.
Alkaline blood makes for an alkaline body, which promotes health, beauty, longevity, and enables your body to fight disease and toxins. Also the more toxins you have in your body the more your fat cells have to expand to store the toxins.. meaning alkaline also helps you lose weight.
Choose alkaline by looking at the chart below and making the alkaline foods your staples! Or click on the image above to enlarge it. I generally eat very alkaline but I’m not perfect and there are points during the week where I do consume acidic foods(margaritas and chips ah!!). You can’t stop life but you can make daily changes to promote health!
VERY ALKALINE FOODS: Ripe fruits, Sprouts, Greens, Vegetables
VERY ACIDIC FOODS: Alcohol, Nicotine, Animal Protein, Artificial Sweeteners, Caffeine, Dairy Products, Sodas, Sugar, Processed Food
